Tribal Chief Beheaded

(N.Z.P.A.‘Reuter —Copyright) IBADAN (Nigeria), July 4. Troops were sent to the Western State town of Ogbomosbo, 60 miles north-east of Ibadan, .today after tax defaulters had beheaded the traditional ruler there. The defaulters also killed five chiefs, a woman and a child, according to reliable sources. The situation in the town was reported to have been brought under control this afternoon. The violence began last night, three days after the expiry of a Western Nigerian Government ultimatum calling on people to pay taxes outstanding from last year. Reliable reports from Ogbomosho say that the defaulters killed Oba (king) Olajide Olayode after he had urged them to pay the taxes. A senior police officer sent to the town confirmed that the ruler had been beheaded, and added: “Vie are still looking for his head.”
