DECISION ON TELANGANA

India’s ruling Congress Party has rejected demands for a separate State in the Telangana region of Andhra Pradesh—an issue that has been the cause of bloodshed and unrest in the southern province for the last six months.
After an emergency meeting yesterday, the Prime Minister (Mrs Indira Gandhi) and seven other senior party leaders appealed to the people of Andhra and its backward Telangana region not to indulge in violence, and to maintain peace. They decided against any division in India’s linguistic States, including Andhra Pradesh, formed 13 years ago.
