TOURIST MISSION
Southern Lakes Interests The merits of the Southern j Lakes district are the theme I of a North Island tour at pre- ■ sent being made by a tourist mission from Queenstown, Wanaka, Te Anau. and Invercargill. The mission, of 50 persons interested in all aspects of tourism in these centres, will last for two weeks and will cost more than $5OOO.
Its purpose is to sell the merits of the whole Southern Lakes district and to supply information on accommodation, climate and air fares to travel agents and the general public. The mission will tomorrow meet the Mayor of Wellington (Sir Francis Kitts) and the Acting Minister of Tourism (Mr Adams-Schneider). It will then go through the North Island, spending five days in Auckland and attending the national Travel and Holiday Association convention in Rotorua on June 13 and 14. Mr J. B. Sheehy, a Queenstown hotelkeeper who is one of the party, said that three years-ago Queenstown organised a short tourist mission to Auckland. The idea now was towards bigger thinking and a combined onslaught.
