LOCAL GOVT REVIEW
Study Of City Problems A review of the local body structure in Christchurch will be made at a special meeting on June 23 of the Waimairi County Council’s finance committee.
Last December, the council had decided to make a review, and it was felt that the time was now opportune, said the chairman (Mr D. B. Rich). There was no particular order of reference for the committee,. but various aspects of local government would be studied.
“There are some points with which the council is concerned,” said Mr Rich. “We feel that membership of the ad hoc boards should be by appointment, instead of by election. Apart from questions of territorial reorganisation, there are other topics for consideration.
“The council has a policy on various aspects of local government, but we have new councillors who should be given the opportunity to give their views, and to understand council policy.”
