METAL SHOP PAINTERS
Union Coverage
Discussed
In some sheet metal engineering shops in Christchurch painters were covered by the Canterbury branch of the New Zealand Engineers’ and Belated Trades Union, said the union's secretary (Mr L. Fortune). A union official said that the Canterbury Painters’ Union might seek to have painters employed in such sheet metal shops- become members of the Painters’ Union and not the Engineers’ Union. Mr Fortune said that any question of a breakaway by aircraft company employees was now a national issue, and was being handled from the union’s headquarters in Wellington. He said also that the Engineers’ Union had made no approaches to members of the Canterbury Boilermakers’ Union in an endeavour to poach members.
