DUTIES ON TOOLS
Protest From Britain
Garden trowels and hand forks imported from Britain now cany a duty of 221 per cent, according to Mr D. J. Hudson, sales director of Jenks and Cattell (Hardware), Ltd, of Wolverhampton, a major manufacturer of garden tools. Mr Hudson said the New Zealand Government had decided to impose a temporary additional duty on garden trowels and hand forks, other than trowels from Canada and trowels and forks from Australia.
For his firm's products, I the new duty would be 193 per cent, making a total of 1221 per cent, plus at least 25 per cent more for freight and landing charges. “We have been a major supplier of these-tools to New Zealand for many years, but these exorbitant duties will now make it impossible for us to export to this important market,” said Mr Hudson. I “We feel it is grossly unfair : for the New Zealand Government to impose such pro- : hibitive tariffs, particularly in view of the fact that Britain is a major customer for New Zealand's produce.” He said this “short-sighted policy” should be taken up between the British and New Zealand Governments.
