WARTIME HELP
Ashburton Woman
About 40 members of the Mid-Canterbury Federation of Country Women’s Institutes were present at a function yesterday afternoon when Mr J. H. Davis, of Aylburton, England, thanked them for their generosity during the last war.
The village of Aylburton, on the Severn Estuary, 20 miles from Gloucester, was adopted by the institutes during the war, and parcels of food, clothing, and bedding sent to help the villagers. Several of the women who had contributed to the parcels were at the function held in the Ashburton Community Centre. Mr Davis was welcomed to Ashburton by the Mayor (Mr G. Glassey), and the secretary of the federation (Mrs T. E. Taylor), who said that it was pleasing to know that the efforts of the members during the war were so much appreciated. Mr Davis said he felt honoured to meet the people of Ashburton, and extended his grateful thanks, and the thanks of the villagers, for their efforts during the war. Mrs R. Leadley, one of the members who sent parcels to Aylburton during the war, thanked Mr Davis, who spoke about his village and showed slides of the surrrounding countryside.
