GEOGRAPHY STUDY
Group From I University { The Motueka and Takaka !districts will be studied this week by a party of 50 senior istudents from the geography | department at the University I of Canterbury. I The students will collect data, through questionnaires; 'and other interviews, for research projects, as part of | I their training in the research | methods of economic and I social geography. Eight groups of students! have designed their own programmes to look into the following topics: The mobility of the population of Motueka, Takaka and Collingwood, the role of the cement industry in the Motueka-Takaka area, the programming of farms in the Motueka district, seasonal labour in Motueka, the use of wilderness and National Park administration, dairy-farming in the Takaka Valley, Port Mapua, and the diffusion of innovations among farmers. The studies are being directed by three staff members, of the department, Drs R. F McLean, R. G. Cant, and R. J. Johnston, and by Miss M. Keys, a graduate student. Professor J. G. Nelson, of the University of Calgary, Alberta, who is visiting the University of Canterbury this! year and who has the use of National Parks as one of his main research interests, will' accompany the party.
