Hunger Strike Protest
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright)
STOCKHOLM, May 9.
Eleven Greeks today continued a hunger strike outside the Greek Embassy in Stockholm, in protest against the alleged ill-treatment of Alexandras Panagoulis, imprisoned on charges of trying to assassinate the Greek Prime Minister (Colonel George Papadopoulos). Reports received in Stockholm by Panagoulis’s brother, Stathis, allege that Alexandras is near death in an Athens prison because of torture and maltreatment.
The 30-year-old prisoner was condemned to death for plotting to overthrow the Greek Government, but the sentence was suspended indefinitely after world protests.
The group outside the embassy have set no time limit for their hunger strike, which began two. days ago. They are encamped on the pavement with sleeping bags and blankets, and display placards calling for the release of Panagoulis.
