SHORTAGE OF URANIUM
Warning Given By Geologist (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright? LONDON, May 8. A British geologist has warned there could be a world shortage of uranium for nuclear power within seven years, unless old mines are reopened, and new mines developed. Mr S. H. U. Bowie, of the Instiute of Geological Studies, told the Commonwealth Mining and Metallurgical Congress in London yesterday that short-term uranium requirements were assured from known reserves in existing mines. In the longer term, however —seven or eight years from now—there was a risk of a uranium shortage. Immediate steps must be taken to rehabilitate mines that have been shut down; plants which have become obsolete or are obsolescent must be replaced, and known i ore fields must be developed,” >he said.
