PROTECTING CLOTHES
School Board Decision I Parents should be sent a circular saying that pupils taking part in practical classes must have some garment to protect their clothes, the Burnide High School board of governors decided last evening. The headmaster (Mr C. Cross) said senior teachers had asked him to suggest that a coat for practical classes—science, art, woodwork and so on—be included in the list of necessary equipment in the school regulations. He produced samples which cost $3.75.
Board members felt the coats were rather expensive and several suggested that an old shirt would serve the purpose.
Mr Cross said it was already suggested to pupils that they bring something to protect their clothes, but they did so only sporadically. Mr Cross agreed with the chairman (Mr B. Zeff) that a circular to parents would help matters. It was decided to send the circular saying that some protective clothing was compulsory and that the. laboratory coats were available, or an old shirt could be used. If this did not solve the problem, then the board would have to think of something else, Mr Zeff said. Last evening’s board meeting was Mr Cross's last before his retirement, and Mr Zeff thanked him on behalf of the board for all the work he had done for the scool.
