OBITUARY

CAPTAIN A. G. M. CHRISTIE Captain Andrew Granville Manners Christie, who died in Christchurch recently, was formerly harbourmaster at Nelson and was also well known at Lyttelton during the Second World War when he served as boom defence officer. He was 78. Captain Christie was born at Balclutha and educated in Christchurch. As a youth he was apprenticed to the Unioe Steam Ship Company's sailin? ship. Dartford. Not only wa he one of the first aboard the Dartford, but he was the first from that ship to obtain his second mate' certificate. Captain Christie subse quently served as an office in other Union Company veseis. In the First World Wa he joined the Royal Naval Re serve and served as a naviga tor in submarines overseaAfter his war-time servici Captain Christie returned t the merchant service am served in a company basec on Hong Kong. He returned to New Zealand in 1935 and was appointed dredgemaster and later pilot in the service of the Nelson Harboui Board. He was later ap pointed harbourmaster at Nel son and remained in thb position until his retirement in 1958, apart from the period spent at Lyttelton in the Second World War. Captain Christie was a life member of the Honourable Company of Master Mariners of Great Britain. He was also a member of the Masonic I Lodge. During his workin- ' life at Nelson he took kee: • interest in the furtheranc of sea scouting interests. Since his retirement he ha< lived in Christchurch. He i survived by his wife, tw sons and a daughter.
