Red Cross Hopes To Raise More
The North Canterbury centre of the Red Cross Society hopes to raise considerably more than the 816.000 collected in 1968 when it holds its annual appeal on May 24.
The centre chairman (Mr A. V. Duncan l said that the appeal was normally held in June but was being put forward this year to avoid clashing with appeals by other charitable organisations.
This year a house-to-house appeal would be held instead of the usual street appeal, he said. It would be held on a Saturday morning by voluntary collectors who would carry cards showing their authority as Red Cross workers. Appeal bags would be prominently marked “Red Cross," said Mr Duncan About 2000 collectors would canvass the city and country areas, he said. Publicity for Red Cross Month, which would culminate in the appeal, would show the projects on which the North Canterbury centre spent the money collected from the public, he said. These projects included the meals-on-wheels service which last year delivered 54.772 meals to invalids and elderly people at a cost of 5i1,234; the library service to housebound elderly folk, which cost 8260: the emergency relief service to fire victims, deserted families, floods and other disaster assistance. 54894: training children and interested adults in first aid, home nursing, and hygiene, about $2000; aiding disabled servicemen, $1149. Assistance to the Wahine
survivors by the centre cost more than $6OOO. Mr Duncan said.
The centre also supplied the national body of the Red Cross with $20,000 as its share towards supporting the welfare team in Vietnam and had supplied $38,000 in two years towards helping the crippled people of Western ! Samoa. ! Mr Duncan said that immunisation of Samoan •children with anti-polio vaccine would be completed this year. Publicity and activities to promote Red Cross Month would begin on May 9 when a sale of fresh farm products, preserves, sweets, and hand work would be held in the Horticultural Hall and a stall in the Square, he said. ! On May 11 there would he a church parade at Si Barnabas’ Church. Fendalton which would be attended by representatives of the armed | service and local bodies. Newspaper and radio and i television publicity would start on May 12 and there ; would be displays in shop i windows, said Mr Duncan.
