Egyptian Denial
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter —Copyright) CAIRO. March 19. Egypt has strongly denied that the giant Aswan Dam, pride of President Nasser’s revolution, is leaking dangerously. A spokesman for the Ministry responsible for the project said yesterday that the report, published in a Swiss newspaper, was “absolute nonsense.”
The report said Egypt had ordered a halt to work on the 1070-yard-long structure, the largest rock-filled dam in the world, because water was leaking through at a rate much heavier than calculated by Soviet experts. The Russians have helped Egypt to build the dam at a cost of £3oom during the last nine years. The dam is due for completion this summer, when the last two of 12 giant turbines are installed.
