SYDNEY, March 19.
In a telephone auction spanning 12,000 miles, bidbers from Melbourne and Sydney have paid $60,000 for 50 Australian paintings. The works were on sale yesterday at Christie’s, in London, this being the second time the three cities had been linked for an auction. Sir William Dobell’s "Old Houses, Park Lane”, was sold to a Sydney bidder for 3200 guineas; and the secondhighest price in the sale, 2000 guineas for a brush-and-ink painting by Arthur Boyd, also came from a Sydney bidder.
Other works sold included Conrad Merten’s “View Near Sydney”; Sir Arthur Streeton's “Venice from the Guidecca”; and Sali Herman's “The Sheep Station”.
