Prefab. Building “Justified”
The erection of temporary buildings at the intersection of Kilmore Street and Montreal Street was a prudent move to satisfy both the immediate needs of teacher training and the long-term requirements of the Christchurch Technical Institute, said the Regional Superintendent of Education (Mr S. S. P. Hamilton).
Mr Hamilton was replying to criticism of the Government’s use of the land made at a meeting of the Civic Trust on Monday evening. “Standard prefabricated buildings have been erected, and they will be used until the Training College moves
vacated by the Training College in 1974. “A good standard of temporary accommodation has been provided, and the surroundings will be as attractive as at the nearby Training College library,” said Mr Hamilton. At the meeting of the Civic Trust, Mr E. T. Beaven said the city had lost at least $lOO,OOO because the Government paid no rates. “Although the Government pays no rates, it makes a grant in lieu, on buildings and their immediate surroundings,” said Mr Hamilton. “This is, and will be, a very important area for education in Christchurch. The three-year teacher training course has meant a tremendous expansion in space requirements. We will be very glad to get out to Ham,” Mr Hamilton said.
