Alsatian Dogs
Sir, —There are many recorded incidents of vicious, unprovoked attack on children and domestic livestock by untrustworthy breeds of dogs. Not the least of these was that of two very small boys who, while playing in the woods near their home in the United States, were set upon, killed, and their bqdies multilated by a neighbour’s “pet dog,” as reported in “Time.” While most would agree with John Honore that unnecessary whittling away of personal freedoms is unacceptable, even less acceptable is the behaviour of owners who cause dog nuisance in the city or recklessly abandon them in the nearby countryside. Banning seems severe, but how would John Honore suggest the above neighbour “pay” for those two little boys? The majority who have a balanced affection for other people and do not need dogs to compensate for unsatisfactory human relationships cannot be expected to tolerate this increasing dog nuisance. —Yours, etc., GERALD BENNETT.
