Romney Values Steady At Lamb Fair

Buyers operated within fairly fixed limits at the Ashburton ewe and wether lamb fair at Tinwald yesterday. For the offering of 16,500 head values were realistic but, in view of the small gallery which followed the sale, it was a sound market. ,

All except 870 of the entry were ewe lambs, and the largest proportion of them were Romneys. Quite a few Border-Romneys and BorderCorriedales were included, but there was only a small selection of Corriedales. Most of the lambs were weltgrown and in forward order. For the Romneys prices ranged mainly from about >5 to >5.70. The best quality pens appeared to sell at 30c to 40c above freezing rates for wether lambs, while the medium class of Romneys sold close to freezing rates, or fractionally better.
