CONDUCTOR DEAD

Constantin Silvestri, one of the best-known orchestral conductors in Europe, has died in London, aged 55. Born in Rumania, Mr Silvestri made his concert debut as a pianist when he was 11 years old; and he was only 17 when he was appointed to conduct the Bucharest Radio Orchestra.
In 1945, he became principal conductor of the Bucharest Philharmonic Orchestra and of the Bucharest State Opera. It was in 1961 that he settled in Britain and took over the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra.
