City Rates Due
Tomorrow is the last day for payment of the Christchurch City Council’s 1968-69 rates before a 10 per cent penalty is imposed. To yesterday afternoon 62.32 per cent of the rates had been paid, compared with 61.8 per cent at the corresponding day last year. The council’s levy is $5,696,502, and there is $2,146,471 outstanding, but payments are coming in rapidly. The council’s cashiers were busy throughout yesterday, and, particularly at the lunch hour, there were queues of eight or nine ratepayers at each window. Rates posted in an envelope bearing a postmark of February 26 are accepted as having been paid in time. Persons who bought or sold properties during the year should check on the rate payment, because a common cause of late payment is confusion between the buyer and seller after the rates have been apportioned.
