Alsatian Dogs

Sir, —Your editorial on Alsatian dogs is a rattier petty and inaccurate piece of writing. You state that Alsatians are sheep-worriers because of their loyalty to their masters. I fail to see the connection and contend that the trouble is caused by a lack of loyalty of owners to their dogs. I believe that sheepworrying is caused by the neglect of some uninterested owners, not only of Alsatians, since other breeds, including farmers’ dogs, are not uncommon as worriers. To say that Alsatians serve no useful purpose apart from crime prevention is ridiculous. How do

you measure the work done by Alsatian seeing-eye dogs, or the pleasure and happiness brought to thousands by the great, inoffensive majority of Alsatian pets? Banning them would be to behave like a bigoted ostrich.—Yours, etc., LIVE AND LET LIVE. February 24, 1969.
