“No Grounds For Fears” About Cashmere Club

Any person who felt the planned Cashmere Club would be different in any way from the proposals already advanced could be assured that the organisation had no such intention, said Mr W. N. Rathbun, chairman of the club’s committee.

He was replying to “Resident,” a correspondent to “The Press,” who said that, with many other South Christ-

chnrch residents, he and his wife attended the inaugural meeting of the proposed Cashmere Club. "Like many of those attending, I was dismayed by the actions of a spokesman of the South Christchurch R.S.A. who stated that their club wished to join forces and become part of the proposed club.

"Later, when nominations were called for committee members, it appeared that certain sections of those present were voting each other on to the committee. My only hope is that this is not the forerunner to a take-over bid by the South Christchurch R.S.A. Let them join by all means, but as individuals, not as a club. “The R.S.A. has its own chartered club in the city and provides all the amenities that a returned serviceman could wish for.

“Let this then be a residents’ club, free from cliques, associate clubs and politics, and let us get away from the too familiar workingmen’s club,” the letter said. “I assure ‘Resident’ that none of his fears has any foundation in fact,” said Mr Rathbun. “While co-operation is desirable, I am certain the identity of the Cashmere Club will be preserved by Its constitution. The person who raised the points mentioned was expressing his own opinion.”
