University, Wharenui Lead Water Polo
The two top teams in the senior water polo competition, University and Wharynul, stayed leved on points after winning their respective matches last evening. These two seem set to contest the grand Anal which will be held on Match 17 after a series of knock-out matches. Results University 4 (I. L. Cunthorp
3, A. Harrow). Christchurch 0. Wharenui 7 (R. B. Erickson 2, T. M. McGirr 2, P. Carpinter, R. Gunthorp, R. A. Leach), Elmwood 3 (P. G. C. Hay 2, H. J. H. Hay). . Jellie Park 8 (P. Sturge 3, R. Pirie 3, I. Johnson 2), Services 2 (B. Wesley, G. Heary). University did not have everything its own way in beating Christchurch but some brilliant saves by the students’ goalkeeper, B. G. Spear, and steady pressure in front of their opponents’ goal make the score 4-0. The University centre-forward, I. H. MacDonald, was the victim of much unnecessary dirty pday and he was forced to leave the pool injured during the match. He subsequently returned and played a strong attacking game. Quick Passing Elmwood did well to hold Wharenui in the first half of its match but quick passing and surprise shots at goal took Wharenui to the front.
Many long shots were the most notable characteristic of the Jellie Park-Services match. However, most passed harmlessly to the side of the nets and merely gave possession to the other team.
