J. Barrington (Britain), the world’s leading player, is expected to score his third successive win when the British open squash championship is staged at the Abbeydale Club, Sheffield, from January 21 to 29.
It is a strong entry but Barrington, the holder and winner of the Australian, South African and Egyptian titles last year, is a clear favourite. The seeds are: Barrington 1, G. Hunt (Australia) 2, A. Taleb (Egypt) 3, K. Hiscoe (Australia) 4, C. Nancarrow (Australia) 5, R. Carter (Australia) 6, M. Corby (Britain) 7, Jawaid (Pakistan) 8.
Badminton Tour.— The South African women’s badminton team, in a line start to a monthlong tour of Britain, defeated an International selection, 9-0, on Monday.
Rumanian Wins.— l. Nastase (Rumania) won the men’s singles title at the Indian international hard-court tennis championships at Madras. He beat the Indian Davis Cup player, P. Lail, <-«, 0-2, 6-3, 7-6.
Acceptor.— Leigh Grant (IS) 9-0 is an additional acceptor for the Alan McDonald Highweight at the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting next Tuesday, according to advice received by the Press Association from the club secretary yesterday.
