DESERTED BEACHES

Poor Bathing Weather

Canterbury beaches were as drab and deserted as on a winter’s day yesterday with only a handful of bathers in the water between Taylor’s Mistake and Spencer Park. Surf club patrolmen said the beaches were the quietest since the week-end before Christmas, the last time there was bad bathing weather.

At New Brighton the quietness of the beach was broken for an hour by two parties of 50 scouts who went there to learn about the activities of surf clubs.

' Patrolmen on duty demonstrated their rescue equipment and outlined the principles of resuscitation. At Taylor’s Mistake there were only two swimmers in I the water to 4 p.m. A strong rip had cut a hole into the bathing area. I Sumner patrolmen said they had seen no-one in the water all day because of the rough seas and cold wind. South Brighton patrolmen spent the day doing crossword puzzles and listening to the cricket. There was nothing for them to do outside. At Waimairi only two people entered the water by 4.30 p.m. Scouts attending the jamboree will continue visiting the surf clubs this week to get instructions in the use of rescue equipment and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation.
