Country Side Slumps

The Victorian Country cricket eleven survived an I early slump to be 140 for (seven at the end of the first I day of play in its match (against the West Indies yesterday. I The country team at times faced barrages of bumpers .from the West Indies fast i bowlers and several players |were hit on the body. One jhad to retire hurt. I Play was held up for 75 minutes when water seeped under the covers overnight after the district had 25 points of rain. The West Indies captain, L. Gibbs, won the toss and sent the country side in on a damp pitch. The openers, R. Walder and D. Cullinan, survived the 35 minutes before lunch and made 13 runs, but between lunch and tea there was a dramatic collapse in which the country side lost six wickets and added only, another 60 runs.
