BOATS EXPLODE IN FLAMES
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, December 15. Blown through the roof of his launch by an explosion this morning, an Auckland man struggled in the water off Islington Bay, Rangitoto Island, and used an oar to splash water over the flames.
The man, Mr C. Scott, aged about 26, a draughtsman, of St Stephen’s Avenue, Parnell, was rescued by the island ranger (Mr G. H. Holmes).
Mr Holmes and his wife treated Mr Scott for a bum to his face. He returned to Auckland by boat about three hours after the explosion.
The launch was the second to explode in flames near Auckland during the weekend. Mr Eric Lance Vincent,
aged 32, of Kelston, was hurled into the water when his launch exploded off Achilles Point, St Hellers, yesterday morning. Mr Vincent, Mr S. Wright, aged 55, of Sandringham, and two children of Mr Vincent, aged nine and seven years, were picked up from a dinghy by a launch. The two men were admitted to Middlemore Hospital, where Mr Wright was treated and discharged. The condition of Mr Vincent tonight was reported as satisfactory.
