Visit By Liner

The Flotta Lauro Line’s passenger liner Achille Lauro sailed from Lyttelton at 6.38 p.m. on Saturday after arriving at 6.20 a.m. The ship, formerly the Willem Ruys, was calling at Lyttelton for the first time. She normally calls at Wellington and Auckland but her owners are interested in testing passenger interest in other ports. The cruise director (Mr E. Pimpini) said that if there was a strong demand the Line had the ability to return but the return depended on many things. There was no problem with the anchorage. Carrying 700 passengers from Australia and 250 from Wellington, the ship sailed for Hobart and Melbourne. On Saturday, passengers either went on a full day’s excursion or on a Summit Road coach tour in the morning.
