Gallery’s Only Endowment
The Robert McDougall Art Gallery was not at all well endowed by Canterbury citizens, the chairman of the Parks and Reserves Committee which controls the gallery (Cr P. J. Skellerup) said in his annual report “An art gallery reflects both the cultural interests and the benevolence of the local population and in this respect Christchurch regrettably falls well behind Auckland, Wellington, and Dunedin,” he said. Apart from a small annual grant from rates, the Robert McDougall Art Gallery has only one endowment, the Ballantyne bequest.
