Senator Jack Outruns Rivals At Westport

(From Our Own Reporter) WESTPORT. Senator Jack, which had been off the winning list since the Craven Plate at Riccarton in 1967, revelled in the heavy track conditions to win the Buller Hotels’ Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Westport Jockey Club’s meeting on Saturday.

The Ikamatua-owned and trained Dogger Bank six-year-old Jed from start to finish for the easiest win of the day. He won by seven lengths from Debbie Marie. Senator ‘Jack was actually never troubled at any stage of the journey. Debbie Marie, one of three runners from J. Lalor’s Reefton stable, was a clear second ahead of Dls-

please, which made up some ground for third. Jayess, which, like most of the others, seemed to be well bogged by the heavy track was fourth ahead of Mister Bud, Bold Invader, Bevlyn, Port Bank, Talic and Count Down. Easy For Nursie The Riccarton mare, Nursie, completed the main double by romping away from the field In the Colvin Hack Handicap. Nursie jumped out well for R. J. McCann and could have improved on her winning mar?in of four lengths over Jes ar, which was alwaya in second place. Celtic Chief, which was always handy, was a fair third ahead of the top-weight, Dr Snoddy. Fatal Flight was fifth ahead of Marope, Alberta, Yatama and the very disapopinting win favourite. Herndale Lad. There was an exciting finish to the Arthur Clouston Handicap, in which Truly Blended got up right on the post to beat Our Leigh, which had made most of the running. Truly Blended and Our Leigh finished well clear of Mr Joe, which failed to carry on in the straight after trailing. Shoshone was fourth, after which came Red Treasure and Reefton Gold. Always Handy

Joyalice, always well placed, won the Patterson Park Stakes comfortably from Kriste, which finished on from well back. Mary Ellen ran on for a fair third ahead of Reefton Queen. The others were well beaten. In a close finish in the Scanlon Hack Handicap, the Ric-

carton-trained Water Deer finished at a great rate to beat the unlucky Doraldo. Doraldo stumbled at the straight entrance and was fortunate to make a recovery. Kowhai Princess was a close third ahead of Pickawyn, which lost some ground at the start. The others were never in it. The Westport-trained Why Should We impressively won the Jennings Memorial Stakes. G. W. Mein jumped him into the lead from the. start and he was never headed, responding well to a strong challenge by Hi Jack in the run home. The each-way favourite, Soeur de Chene, which hung out in the heavy going, was third ahead of Chota. The others were well back. PATTERSON PARK STAKES $400; 6f. 1/1 JOYALICE (9) car. 8-3* nrA . D. A.
