748 Due Today Mount Cook Airlines’ new Hawker-Siddeley 748 turboprop aircraft is due to arrive at Christchurch Airport at 3 p.m. today. It left Britain on its delivery flight last Wednesday and yesterday a message was received in Christchurch to say the delivery was on schedule. The 748 is being flown out by Captain G. B. Williams, the company’s airline manager. Buller Whitebait Although the run of whitebait in the main Buller River has stopped abruptly because of semi-flood conditions, good catches are being made from the lagoon area surrounding Martin’s Island and from the Orowaiti River. Catches up to 801 b have been made from Martin’s Island in the last two days and up to 401 b has been caught from the Orowaiti. The fish are about in large quantities, although the weather is generally considered unfavourable for a run. The price is about 70c per 1b.—(F.0.0.R.) Drainage Questions Subdivision drainage matters could be overlooked, said the executive committee chairman (Dr W. R. Holmes) when the North Canterbury Catchment Board yesterday decided to ask the Christchurch Regional Planning Authority if it could be represented by staff at meetings of the authority’s technical advisory committee. Drainage from subdivisions into streams had reached a crucial position in some areas, said Dr Holmes. Homes Appeal The Combined Children’s Homes Appeal Trust Board will hold its annual house-to-house appeal in Christchurch today. The secretary of the board (Mrs F. S. Miller-Mead) said last evening that school pupils in Christchurch and members of Bible class groups from several churches would help with the collecting. Last year about $lO,OOO was raised from the appeal. Last year 847 children needed the help of one of the three churches—Anglican, Methodist and Presbyterian—which form the board. A total of 538 children from 235 families were able to remain with their own families given help, 92 children were put in foster homes and 172 were admitted to one of the small family units belonging to one of the three churches. Fishing Rivers The Selwyn River was the only river reported to be clear and fishable by the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society yesterday. The Ashley was discoloured but clearing. The Waiau, Ashburton and Rangitata rivers were high and dirty, the Hurunui River and Rakaia River gorge were very dirty, and the Waimakariri River gorge and mouth were both dirty. The Rakaia River mouth was dirty and in flood.
