Gardner, Miss Oddie Win Ski-ing Titles
M. Gardner (Amur! Ski Club) and Miss V. Oddie (Canterbury Winter Sport Club) won the men’s and women’s titles at the Canterbury Individual ski championships at Craigleburn Valley during the week-end. Gardner was In splendid form, displaying good rhythm in the slalom. Miss Oddie, who showed much promise as a junior, skied consistently well to take the combined title with a third tn the slalom and a second in the giant slalom. The giant slalom was held on Saturday in perfect conditions. Mr H. Schuter set a course of 40 gates with a vertical fall of about 2000 ft, which was well up to overseas standards. The men’s giant slalom resulted in a dead heat between Gardner and C. Wormersley (North Canterbury), both New Zealand Olympic skiers. P. Hubrich was third, just over four seconds behind them. This meant that the combined title depended on the slalom. The slalom was held on Sunday in reasonably good conditions. The course had 50 gates and a vertical fall of 600 ft. Wormersley fell near the bottom of the course on his first run. ruihing hi* chances for the combined title. Gardner attacked the course to take fastest time with his first run, and with hla second run he went even faster by two seconds, thug taking the combined title.
