Hatchery

The day-old chicks which are sent to contract growers by the Prairie Gold company are produced In the Hi-Brid Chicks, Ltd, hatchery at Weedons.

The hatchery has, at the moment, about 9000 breeding birds. In order to maintain and improve the quality of the breed, many testmatings are carried out and extremely detailed records are kept The company keeps in close contact with the originators of the Hi-Line breed in Australia, and test results are sent to the company’s genetic experts, who set out the Christchurch firm’s breeding programme. The eggs are hatched in huge automatic machines which keep the eggs at the right humidity and temperature and turn the eggs automatically.

Between 75 and 80 per cent of the eggs hatch successfully, and there are two “hatches" a week, each of about 8000 birds.

IF an egg is of good quality, the yolk will sit up on a firm white. If the white is thin and runny, the egg has been kept too long or at too high a temperature.
