Malvern County Roading Programme Approved

A five-year roading programme involving an expenditure of $1,101,300 was approved by the Malvern County Council yesterday. The proposals were asked for by the National Roads Board, which, if the council’s plans are approved, will find $533,900 of the total cost The County Engineer (Mr W. J. Bevis) said that the programme, to start next year, would involve the sealing of 62 miles of road. The sealing of the mam county roads would be completed by the end of next financial year, and the bulk of

the new sealing would be done on secondary roads. Provision was made to widen to 18ft most of the 12ft seal on the Old West Coast, Bealey and Leachs Roads, he said, and for $230,000 in total to be spent on unspecified bridges, the council’s share to come from loan. Crossings.— Arising from the national Railways Department survey of level crossings, the council agreed to erect 38 reflecting signs. Cr A. D. Worsfold said the cost would be about $lOOO for the signs alone. Mr Bevis said a check showed an average of 628 vehicles a day on the Aylesbury crossing, and the department would be asked to install lights. Old Office.— lt was fairly sure that the Darfield St John Ambulance Brigade would be able to raise the $5OOO to buy the old council chambers, said the Clerk (Mr B. W. Perrin). Fire Service.—The council decided to seek official status from the Fire Services Council for the South Malvern fire unit at Coalgate, subject to the brigade meeting conditions, and, if this is granted, to buy the old Coalgate railway station for $2OO to serve as headquarters. Landscaping.—An estimate of $435 was accepted for the landscaping of the new council office grounds. Nissella.—A new nassella tusock infestation had been found on the Seiwyn River a mile upstream from the Main South Road, said the weeds inspector (Mr D. C. Smith). Fifty plants were grubbed from half an acre. Disappointment was expressed by the council that only seven farmers had attended a nassella clearance day at Lake Coleridge.
