DEFENCE PARTY VISITS FARM
A party from the Imperial Defence College, London, yesterday toured a Canterbury sheep and arable farm and a Christchurch factory.
Sir Walter Mulholland’s farm at Darfield, was described by the party leader, Mr A. M. Mackintosh, as
“obviously a very good farm" and similar to a comparable very good farm in the United Kingdom. The object of the visit, said Mr Mackintosh, was for the 15 students in the party to get to know the feeling of the country, the people, and economic and social aspects. The New Zealand tour was not primarily military but there would be some military discussions. / Mr Mackintosh said that members of the party were obtaining first-hand impressions of countries studied academically in London. Yesterday afternoon they went for a jet-boat ride on the Waimakariri River as guests of C. W. F. Hamilton and Company, Ltd. The vice-president of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association (Mr E. P. Chapman) was presented with a hand-painted plaque from the college by Mr Mackintosh at a luncheon given by the association.
Late yesterday the visitors left by air for Wellington.
