Study Of Charges

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 12. The Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Marshall) told Parliament tonight that the investigation into the system of bank charges was almost complete and he hoped the examiner of trade practices and prices would be in a position to make his preliminary assessment by the end of this month. Speaking during the debate on the Department of Industries and Commerce estimates, Mr Marshall said there was still some information to be obtained from the banks themselves. Under the Act the examiner had to determine whether in his view the action taken in changing the system of bank charges was contrary to the public interest.

If he decided It was he could invite the parties to discuss the question in conciliation.

If the banks accepted his view then the matter would be dealt with but if they did not the question would be resolved by the Restrictive Trade Practices Commission.
