Damage To Ponies

Sir,—Mr N. C. Mahon is to be commended on bringing to light the lamentable practice of breaking-in very young ponies. This has been going on for years with everyone turning the proverbial deaf ear. It is time that something was done to see that these unfortunate ponies are given 'a chance to mature without being asked to. carry weights on their still growing bone structure. Late two-year-old, or preferably three would be quite early enough. Even at this age most are still ’ growing and should be only lightly worked. At a re. cent sale a pony little more than a foal was brought into the ring broken to saddle. We can only hope that the purchaser has the wisdom its previous owner lacked. The harm done to these very young ponies is irreparable and usually produces a lifeless, sluggish animal.—Yours, etc., (Mr and Mrs) . I* L. L. BEVINS. September 11, 1968.
