Clarkville School
Sir, —The Eyre County Council’s decision to prohibit the erection of a new school residence at Clarkville is deplorable. Mr Harman states that if the subdivision had been put before the council approval would have been granted. Surely an error in protocol by the Ministry of Works should not be allowed to jeopardise an urgent necessity for the district. Mr Hanan should remember that, as the voice of the ratepayers and not the “masters,” as he affirms, the interests of the community must always have first priority. A strong rebuke by the county to the ministry would surely have been sufficient in this isolated case. The dictatorial attitude implied by the council is surely equalled in this instance by the councillors themselves and one would have expected them to have shown enough (
maturity not to allow minor infringements to stand in the way of something the whole of the Clarkville ratepayers have been striving for for years.—Yours, etc., H. J. BARNARD. Kaiapoi, September 11, 1968.
