REGISTRAR’S OFFICE
Move Planned For Saturday
When the offices of the Registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages moves from “The Press” building in Cathedral Square on Saturday, an association of 32 years will end.
At various times since 1936, four Government departments have had offices in “The Press” buildings. The pensions office of the Health Department was the first Government office to be established in the premises. Since then, several offices of the Education Department, including the vocational guidance office and psychological division, the stamp office of the Inland Revenue Department and the Registrar's office of the Justice Department, have been housed in the building. The Registrar’s office, which has been in the building for the last four years, will move to the Manchester Unity building on the corner of Worcester and Manchester Streets. The vacant office will be used by the Christchurch Press Company, Ltd, for office extensions.
