WAITANGI DAY
No Support For Change
(From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11.
A petition asking for Waitangi Day to be declared a national day failed to find support in the Petitions Committee of Parliament. The petition, presented by Mrs D. I. Dobson, of Fairiie, was returned to Parliament today with the recommendation that no action be taken. Labour members said that, without prompting by Mrs Dobson or anyone else, the Government should declare February 6 an extra fully paid public holiday, as outlined in Labour’s election policy of 1966. The chairman of the committee, Mr G. G. Grieve (Nat., / Awarua) said that Mrs Dobson had not only proposed a holiday, she had asked for Waitangi Day to be celebrated on Labour Day, and for celebrations to be held at every port at which the treaty was signed. The Government would not agree to this.
