SHIPPING TALKS
No Sign Of Settlement
(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Sept. 11. The freight talks entered their third day in Wellington today with little sign of an early settlement. Sources said there had been some progress, but the two sides in the negotiations —the producer boards and the British Conference Lines —were still far apart. It is thought that after the initial discussions on Monday the New Zealand negotiators have become resigned to some increase in freight rates and that the negotiations now are over the extent of the increase.
Mr C. E. W. Stevenson, the deputy-chief officer of the Christchurch Metropolitan Fire Board, who will retire early next month received the board's good wishes last evening. Mr W. R. Campbell, the chairman, said Mr Stevenson had given 40 years loyal service to fire-fighting.
