West Berlin Rally Clash

(N.Z.P.A -Reuter—Copyright) WEST BERLIN, Sept. 2. Left and Right-wing Germans exchanged blows in West Berlin yesterday in a “Day of the Germans” rally in the half-empty Waldbuchne Stadium. The trouble began when groups of emigres from former German territories marched into the open-air stadium in national costume, waving flags. About 50 Left-wing students stood up, raised their right arms in the Nazi salute and shouted “Sieg heil, sieg heil.” They were immediately set upon by other groups. Later, 8000 former Silesians, East Prussians and Sudeten Germans began singing an old Silesian German nationalist song, and the Leftwingers countered by singing the Communist anthem, the “Internationale.” More fist-fights resulted, and strong police units moved in to isolate the demonstrators.
