‘Cold War Again’

(N.Z. Press Assn. — Copyright? WASHINGTON, Sept. 3. Cold war has been started all over again by the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia, a national opinion poll reported today. Americans questioned in the Louis Harris survey in the “Washington Post” concluded by 59 to 27 per cent that the invasion proved “all Communist countries are alike and cannot be trusted.” By 63 to 23 per cent they said the cold war had resumed. And by 65 to 19 per cent they agreed that the United States should “strengthen its defences and alliances, such as N.A.T.O. and be prepared to resist aggression anywhere in the world." But a majority of only 40 to 38 per cent believed the United States should demand the withdrawal of Warsaw Pact troops from Czechoslovakia and an overwhelming majority voted for continuing attempts to work out a peace with Russia. “. . . Although most condemn the invasion, there is considerable reservation about risking a war between the two super-Powers,” the survey said.
