J. Stevens Wins Squash

J. Stevens, of Auckland, won the Canter-

bury squash rackets title, beating G. Moss, also of Auckland, 9-7, 9-5, 9-3, in the final on Saturday.

Moss looked set to take the first game, when, while making most of the play, he led 7-5. Unfortunately, at this stage he was clearly upset by a decision rgainst him and from then appeared to lose his determination.

On Steven’s earlier form, it is doubtful if Moss could have won the match but if he had taken the first game he, might have had the confidence to succeed with his risky touch play. The final began with a 23 shot rally which ended with a Moss winner. He went quickly to 3-0 before Stevens scored and then it was from ar error by Moss.

In contrast. Moss was prepared to go for winners whenever the opportunity came. As in his previous games he scored freely with nick shots, both on drives and volleys. In the second game. Stevens began to dominate the play. His length shots hugged the walls, forcing errors from Moss, and he showed better control of his short game. Race, Length The final game showed Stevens at his best—every shot was controlled both for pace and length.

The over-all feature of the match was the control of pace shown by both players.

Stevens earlier had a decisive win over S. O’Dwyer (Auckland), the third seed, in a semi-final.

Moss had been equally impressive in his semi-final with

D. Scott (Auckland). In this match some of his overheads were magnificent. Women's Title The women’s championship went to Miss K. Glenny (Wellington) who defeated Mrs R. Woodhead (Canterbury). 10-8, 9-2, 9-5. Mrs Woodhead had earlier accounted for the topseed, Miss T. Lawes (Welling ton). She showed great court tactics to out-manoeuvre her much younger opponent. The other Canterbury. semifinalist. Mrs P. Leopold, took Miss Glenny to five games in one of the best matches of the tournament.

Mrs Woodhead used deep lobs followed by some crisp drives to good effect at the beginning of her final with Miss Glenny, but once Miss Glenny began to drive deeper she deservedly tok the game at 10-8. By keeping the game very tight and volleying well. Miss Glenny took the second 9-2 She went away to a quick lead in the third when Mrs Woodhead persistently drove her forehand cross court, withstood a brief challenge to 5-7, before convincingly volleying three fine winners for the match.
