HIGH STANDARD AT N.Z. JUNIOR SOLOS

Playing of a high standard was heard at the National Junior Solos conducted in Christchurch on Saturday by the New Zealand Brass Bands Association.

The performance of K. I. Gilbert, the winner of the section for 13 years and under 15 instrumentalists, other than cornet and flugel. had been outstanding, said the judge, Mr W. Stewart, conductor of the Skellerup Woolston Band. He was also impressed by the

pleasant and easy style of V. Pheloung, who was second. G. Thorne, in the 13 and under 15 cornets and flugel. had also given a musical performance of merit, said Mr Stewart. The present New Zealand Bb cornet champion, N. Grenfell, was first in the second 15 and under 17 cornets and flugels only but he was pressed hard by P. Turnbull who was second, one point behind.

The judge of this section, Mr R. Simpson, conductor of the Christchurch Fire Brigade Band said he felt that the future of New Zealand bands was in good hands as long as there were nlayers as capable as some of the top players in this section. V. McDonald gave an outstanding performance in winning the under 13 section. Mr J. Rafferty, who was the judge for the 15 and under 17 section other than cornets and flugel, said that he had been disappointed with the playing. Jellyman. who had displayed artistry and technique of the highest order.
