’Quake Victim’s Rates Waived

WESTPORT, Aug. 28.
The Buller County Council voted unanimously today to waive the current rates owed by an earthquake victim, Mr F. J. Jackson. Mr Jackson’s wife was killed when a hillside engulfed their home in the Lower Buller Gorge, about 27 miles from Westport, early on May 24. Mrs Jackson’s mother, Mrs F. Blackmore, who was severely injured at the time, died later in a Christchurch hospital. In his application for relief. Mr Jackson said he had applied to the Valuation Department for a revaluation of his property, but had been advised that this could not be made effective until April 1, 1969.
