TABLE TENNIS Northland Pair Win Fifth Mixed Doubles

Playing with their usual high skill, G. A. J. Frew and Mrs N. Traill (Northland), won their fifth New Zealand open mixed doubles title, at the New Zealand table tennis championships at Cowles Stadium last evening.

They equalled the record of M. L. Dunn (Auckland), who won five mixed doubles titles with Miss J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley) and Mrs N. J. Houlihan (Northland) between 1960 and 1966.

Frew and Mrs Traill combined exceptionally well to beat the second seeds, G. V. Wilkinson (Auckland) and Miss V. M. Rolston (Hamilton), 21-13, 21-15, 15-21, 21-10. Frew and Mrs Traill hit with purpose whenever possible to take the first two games without difficulty. They relaxed a little in the third. But after being down 6-19 they fought back to 14-19. The No. 1 seed in the men’s singles, B. A. Foster (Otago), beat his team-mate, G. B. Murphy, 21-14, 21-13, 21-12 to reach the semi-finals. He will play the unseeded G. J. Jennings (Auckland), who is a former Australian men’s singles champion. Jennings returned to New Zealand earlier this year after a spell in Australia. He has not played to his best form this season but his vast experience no doubt helped him. T. J. O’Carroll (Northland), seeded No. 7 who was almost upset by the little known Malaysian student, Loke Sim Wong (North Shore), in the quarter-finals will meet the No. 2 seeded player, A. R. Tomlinson (Auckland).

Reputations and form counted for little in the open men’s and women’s singles events. Four of the eight men’s seeds were eliminated and three women seeds were beaten before the quarterfinals had been reached.

Loke Sim Wong could have been the sensation of the men's singles. His brilliant counter hitting and lightning reflexes stretched O’Carroll to near breaking point. However, he could not keep up his pressure in the last two games. O’Carroll went to a 11-0 lead in the fourth game.

An unseeded pair, Mrs Traill and Miss C. M. O’Carroll (N.I beat the fourth seeds. Misses G. M. Kemp and A. J. Eden (Nelson) and the second seeds. Misses J. E. Brown (Hutt Valley) and V. M. Rolston (Hamilton) to reach the final of

the women’s doubles. They will play the fourth seeds, Misses Y. M. and M. J. Fogarty (Otago) who eliminated the top seeds, Miss D. L. Wade (Auckland) and Mrs C. E. Tadema (Hamilton), 21-13, 20-22, 22-20, 22-20, in the semi-finals.

Miss B. A. Taylor (Canterbury) will play the top seed, Miss K. A. Fraser (Central Waikato), in the final of the under 16 girls' singles this morning. The remaining eight underage finals will be completed this morning and the open events will be settled in the evening.
