FOLK SONG CONCERT
Members of the Risingholme Community Choir sang a set of German songs at the Durham Street Art Gallery last evening as part of the German Week exhibition. Accompaniments were played by Miss Cant and Mr Albert Wilson conducted.
The small group of singers was very well drilled. Their words were unfailingly clear and they sang with smooth voice production creating pleasantly mellow tone. Expression and phrasing showed musicianly perception and there was exemplary cohesion and balance.
Most of the folk songs in this attractive little programme had been arranged by Brahms, whf> had served
them very sensitively while retaining their natural bloom and character. It so often happens that an arranger of folk tunes will make them far too sophisticated. It is interesting that most German and Austrian folk songs make ideal exercises for development of the voice, as those chosen for this programme clearly showed.
As an interlude a group of children, costumed in bright colours, presented three folk-dances. The boys and girls were secure and confident in their movements and sang softly and tunefully as they danced. A Bavarian clap-dance was particularly attractive. —C.F.B.
