Proud Chief In Form
“The Press” Special Service
AUCKLAND. Proud Chief, one of the most prominent acceptors in the Avondale Cup, showed himself in excellent condition when he led Honourbright by half a length and six others by four lengths and more over a mile and a quarter at the Auckland Racing Club’s barrier trials at Takanini yesterday. Ridden by D. J. Wyatt. Proud Chief galloped freely in front and ran on resolutely to hold off Honourbright, which came home well. Clarendon and What You Will headed the rest.
Proud Chief returned 2min 27 2-ssec, the fastest time for the three heats over a mile and a quarter, and covered the last half mile in 56sec.
The other winners over a mile and a quarter were Sennoma and Dr Simon. Both won easily. Sennoma from half a dozen opponents, most of which were fairly moderate.
As might have been expected the fastest time in 10 heats over five furlongs was in the one for open horses, which Ginza won narrowly from Mitamit, Claroch and Morning Star. There was not much between Ginza and Mitamit.
Both are acceptors for Avondale on Saturday, Ginza In the Sheriff Handicap and Mitamit in the Borough Handicap.
OTHER WINNERS Lynbrae, Diomede, Libva, Fair Test, Court Lass, Mr Dollar and Kip Again were other winners over five furlongs and King Tide, although only
second, went just as impressively.
Diomede, a three-year-old filly by Alcimedes from Eulyth, ran out the easiest of winners, by seven lengths, in one of the weaker heats. She has yet to race this season but she is evidently ready to resume. With luck she should clear maiden company quickly. Kip Again looked likely to improve with the run when he won the tenth heat.
Princess Tina and Counties Gold, which are acceptors for the Plunket Handicap at Avondale, were first home in heats for two-year-olds. Both went well, with Princess Tina specially impressive. A chestnut, by Syntax from Queen’s Navy, Princess Tina ran away from eight opponents over the last furlong of two and a half to win the last of four heats by five lengths. Counties Gold and a brown colt by Forearmed from Moor Rose, were too fast for three
others In the first heat and finished eight lengths clear. An unnamed gelding, by Fair Lord from an unknown mare, won the third heat for two-year-olds, and Flighty Madam comfortably won the second heat.
Sunday Racing Proposed If permission is granted the Canterbury - Westland branch of the Owners, Trainers and Breeders’ Association will conduct race trials on a Sunday in October. The association’s president (Mr O. F. S. Martini) said at the annual meeting on Monday night it was hoped to hold the trials On October 6. Mr Martini said all profits from such a venture would be donated towards the cost of sending the New Zealand team to the Olympic Games in Mexico.
