Gladaub Fit For Steeplechase

Glaudaub, which was second to Ettrick in the Enfield Steeplechase at the Grand National meeting, showed his fitness for the Eastern Southland Steeplechase at Gore on Saturday, when he worked well at Wingatui yesterday. Ridden by A. K. Robinson, Gladaub worked strongly over half a mile on the grass to shade the President’s Handicap candidate. Mighty Peak (P. J. Silver), in 53sec, the last three furlongs in 40sec. There were four lengths to Tara Hill (T. Wright), which was clear of Kumaitu (W. McEwen).

The gallops were held 60 feet out on the inside grass. Gladaub has done well since he returned from Riccarton after a North Island campaign over country at the end of last week.

Winchman (E. J. Didham) a light-weight runner in the Mandeville Hack Handicap, was accompanied by Donald Mac (B. P. Kennedy) over the same

ground in 53 2-ssec. the fir«t three furlongs in 40sec. These times were equalled by The Medico (A. K. Robinson) and Celebrate (T. Wright).

Opstan (R. N. Marsh) and Kurwood <G. Mee) recorded an attractive trial over five furlongs on the plough. They ran the first two furlongs in 25 2-ssec and Opstan had a slight lead at the post tn Imin Ssec. Kurwood was at a disadvantage in the weights. He is due to resume at the Otago Hunt meeting and will then race in the high-weight at the Ashburton meeting. Aidershot (A. I. Powell) and The Greatest (H. T. Anderton) were not hurried over half a mile in 54 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 41 2-ssec.

The unraced Kindle <H. J. Powell) was shaded by her more experienced stable-mate. David Porter (E. J. Didham), over the last half mile ot their five furlong trial in 54sec, the last three furlongs in 41sec, but she was at a disadvantage in the weights and completed her task well.
